Archbishop José H. Gomez celebrated the Rite of the Opening of the Jubilee Year in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the 10 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
The faithful gathered on the Cathedral Plaza to hear the word of God and the proclamation of the Jubilee Year and then processed with Archbishop Gomez into the Cathedral for Mass guided by a processional cross dedicated to the Cathedral to be displayed in the sanctuary for veneration throughout the Jubilee Year.
The faithful from across the globe are encouraged to go on pilgrimage to Rome to pass through the holy doors and participate in special Jubilee festivities. You can check the calendar of events from the Holy See for specific groups.
A holy door is a specially designated entrance to a church.By crossing the threshold, we express with our bodies our faith in Jesus, through whom salvation comes. As Jesus himself declares, “I am the gate for the sheep ... Whoever enters through me will be saved” (John 10:7, 9).When pilgrims pass through a holy door with faith and proper intentions, they receive grace from God.
During the Jubilee of Hope, holy doors will be opened at the major basilicas of Rome, along with one at a Roman prison (unlike the Jubilee of Mercy, local Churches will not open holy doors during this Jubilee).
